History: Originally thought to have been brought to Italy from Greece by the Phoenicians. Name derived form Italian word for Hellenic, ‘Ellenico’. But more recent theories discredit this and suggest more likely that the grape originates from Southern Italy. The most feasible explanation is that during the Spanish occupation of Southern Italy in the 15th century the grape was called grape of the plain – where the Spanish llano means plain.
Flavours: Smoky and good acidity, tannic. Chocolate & plum characteristics
Misc interest:
Viticulture: Early budding and late ripening, likes dry sunny climate. Vigorous. Reasonably resistant to Powdery Mildew but susceptible to botrytis rot
